UCLA junior DT Eddie Vanderdoes is "better at stuffing the run than attacking quarterbacks" but "often arrives with a thud as a tackler," observes CBS Sports' Rob Rang.
It's best to view Vanderhoes and DT Kenny Clark as unmovable objects who eat up blockers to allow UCLA's LBs, now led by Myles Jack, to make plays. That's not to say either is one-dimensional, however. "Vanderdoes has just average initial burst off the ball, though he does show some lateral agility to elude blockers as well as the vision and spatial awareness to 'feel' blockers around him," Rang wrote. "He's powerful; incorporating a strong slap to knock would-be blockers away and the leg drive to simply walk opposing blockers into the pocket." The 6-foot-3, 305-pounder posted 50 tackles, 5.5 TFL and two sacks last year to earn honorable mention Pac-12 accolades for the second straight season. Rang thinks he could stand to improve conditioning and lose some gut fat, which he posits may be causing the prospect to play a little high.
