Minnesota sophomore linebacker De'Vondre Campbell may start for the first time on Saturday against Western Illinois.
Nobody listened to Gophers coach Jerry Kill in the offseason when he compared Campbell's pro potential to wrecking ball DT Ra'Shede Hageman's, but Campbell has opened eyes in limited snaps the past two weeks. The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder ranks fourth on the Gophers with 11 tackles despite beginning both games on the bench. Campbell fell through the cracks during the recruiting process, primarily because his Florida high school team wasn't good and he struggled in the classroom. Those issues sent him to Hutchinson (Kan.) CC, where he sat one year and then recorded 83 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 2012. Those numbers put him on the national radar and he committed to both Tennessee and Kansas State -- and flirted with Texas -- before signing with Minnesota. "He doesn't mess around," Kill said. "He's focused and locked in." Thu, Sep 12, 2013 02:07:00 PM
