ACC commissioner John Swofford said that the "ideal" number of teams in the college football playoff would be eight.
Swofford is far from the only one to have suggested that having a four-team playoff is on the limited side. "You have four teams that get a chance to play for the national championship, which is twice as many as before, but whoever's fifth or sixth is not going to be happy,' said the commissioner. "There will be some conferences that won't have a team in the playoff." Swofford is on the management committee for the playoff. He noted that the reason the presidents decided on a four-gamer was that any larger would turn football into a two-semester sport, which they didn't want, and would interfere with exams.
