Northwestern senior QB Clayton Thorson completed 41-of-64 passes for 455 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in Saturday's 34-31 overtime win over Nebraska.
Thorson (6'4/226) was not perfect in this one, but he put together a beautiful final drive to send the game to overtime. The Wildcats got the ball back on their own one-yard line trailing 31-24 with 2:30 remaining in the game, after which the senior quarterback hit on six-of-seven passes to march Northwestern down the field (with the aid of a few penalties). That drive culminated with a game-tying five-yard touchdown strike to JJ Jefferson with just seconds remaining in regulation. The team would go on to win in overtime on a 37-yard field goal off the leg of Drew Luckenbaugh. With Northwestern struggling mightily on the ground since Jeremy Larkin's abrupt retirement near the end of September, Thorson has been throwing the ball a ton of late. Over his last two games, he's attempted 111 passes while throwing for 828 yards with a 6/4 TD/INT ratio. He'll have a prime opportunity for big numbers against Rutgers next weekend. Oct 13 - 4:29 PM
