247Sports' Kevin Wade passes along that Oregon ran the Pistol offense on 70% of their first-half spring game snaps.
In the Pistol, the running back lines up directly behind the quarterback in shotgun, rather than lining up on either side of him as we traditionally see in most spread attacks. That Oregon will be implementing that offense to apparently serious degree shouldn't come as a huge surprise, as Jim Mastro -- their new running backs coach -- orchestrated heavy use of the system while at Nevada in the 2000's. Mastro talked up the advantage of the Pistol earlier this spring, saying, "Your backfield set doesn’t tip anything anymore. What it does is in my opinion, is make defenses show their hand a little bit." May 15 - 4:34 PM
