Texas HC Tom Herman said at the end of spring practice that the running backs group "[hadn't] improved quite dramatically like some of those other positions" during spring practice.
Herman had a few moments of public fire for his running backs room over the course of spring practice, most notably due to issues Toneil Carter and Daniel Young had with their ball security. He at one point called for an "open tryout" at the position. Things appear to have improved since then, with 247Sports' Jeff Howe relaying from his little birdies that sophomore Young took Herman's criticism to heart and was on the upward trajectory at the end of spring practice. Young rushed for 373 yards (4.6 YPC) and three touchdowns as a true freshman a year ago. The team could still benefit from adding another back to the mix, though, and we view Austin as a perfect landing spot for Cal's Tre Watson. Watson is deciding between the Longhorns and Texas Tech. Both programs would offer him opportunities for carries, but Texas is -- we think -- very close to leveling up in the Big 12, a proclamation that we would not feel remotely comfortable making about Texas Tech.
