Billy Hurley III finished T15 last year at TPC Summerlin and returns to Las Vegas this week for another shot at the Shiners Hospitals for Children Open.
BH3 is still riding high in terms of TOUR status, still holding onto his victory at the 2016 Quicken Loans National. That exemption will run out at the end of the 2017-18 season so Hurley III will need to improve over last year since he finished 135th in the FedExCup race. Before last week he had struggled with eight straight finishes outside the top 60 but snapped out of it with a T25 at the Sanderson Farms Championship. With a good recent result in his mind, Hurley III will look to pair that with his success at TPC Summerlin last year and hopefully create those same fireworks. Wed, Nov 1, 2017 01:39:00 PM
Billy Hurley III took home the trophy at the 2016 Quicken Loans National, held at Congressional Country Club, and makes his way back this week for a chance to defend his title, this time being hosted by TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm.
The Naval Academy grad received a sponsor's invite into the field last year and parlayed it into his first career win. The Maryland resident took a two-shot lead into the finale and went on to win by three strokes over Hall of Famer Vijay Singh. The TOUR heads two miles down the road to take on a different venue this year but it won't change the comfort level for the BH3. At media day, the defending champ said, "I practice here a good bit, so maybe I can have a little leg up on guys because I've probably played the course more than anybody else on TOUR." Hurley III arrives on the heels of two straight missed cuts but previously rattled off six straight cuts made before that. Tue, Jun 27, 2017 01:06:00 PM
World No. 131 Billy Hurley III carved out a 1-under-par 35-36=71 in today's final round of the Wells Fargo Championship to finish off on 6-under 282, down one place to T9 with play will in progress.
This was the Naval Academy grad's fourth visit, first since a T38 in 2015 at Quail Hollow, his only other cash. He was making his 15th start of the season and departs with a fourth top 25, possibly a first top 10. Regardless, the 34-year-old will post a season best, previously T15 at the Shriners back in November. After kicking off in 70-68-72, he began on 5-under (T8), three back of 54-hole leader Patrick Reed. The Virginia native mustered seven (of 14) fairways and nine greens in regulation, losing 1.497 strokes tee-to-green but gaining 2.872 on-the-green. He squared three bogeys at holes 3, 10 and 14, slightly offset by four birdie-3s at 7, 9, 11 and 13. Sun, May 7, 2017 05:11:00 PM
With preferred lies in effect, Billy Hurley III styled a 3-under-par 33-36=69 in round two of the Wells Fargo Championship, climbing to 5-under 139 at the midpoint, good for the early clubhouse lead on a weather-delayed Friday. UPDATE: With second-round play completed (on Saturday), Hurley III is T2, one back of 18- and 36-hole leader Francesco Molinari, and his 69 was tied for low round with eight others.
BH3 kicked off his round on the back nine and traded two birdies with two bogeys before making the turn. That included the highlight of the round, a 46'3" hole out for birdie at the par-4 16th. Despite preferred lies being used, the scoring conditions were not easy by any means, given the wind gusts that exceeded 30 MPH at times. After the turn, the 34-year-old really settled in and then closed out his day with birdies in four of his last seven holes. It was largely due to great ball-striking as he walked off the course gaining 4.031 strokes approaching-the-green. Helping his dinner taste a little better, Hurley III also splashed home a 9'5" par-saver at the closing par-4 ninth hole. Fri, May 5, 2017 03:55:00 PM
