Louis Oosthuizen hung up a bogey-free 7-under-par 32-33=65 in the first round of Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and is tied for the lead.
Another year, another fast start for the South African, who shares top spot with Spain's Pablo Larrazabal. Oosthuizen has started the calendar year with a win in four of the last five seasons and is on course to add to that remarkable sequence after his blemish-free morning lap at windy Doha GC. The 2010 Open champion set the tone with a pair of opening birdies at 10 and 11 before adding three in a four-hole burst at 16, 18 and 1. Another at 6 and a walk-off par breaker at 9 meant he matched his low round at this event. That was a 65 in the second round in 2009 when he finished runner-up. Today, Oosthuizen piped 10 (of 14) fairways, hit 14 greens in regulation and was 4-for-4 in scrambling. "I like windy conditions," said Oosthuizen after his successful battle with the elements. "If it gets really strong, then it gets difficult. I think patience is the big thing when it really blows hard. But today was just a good wind, and a lot of flighted shots, which I like."
