Ernie Els struggled in his opening round of The 143rd Open Championship after which he signed for a 7-over-par 42-37=79.
The two-time winner of the Claret Jug opened the tournament by three-putting from inside the leather at the par-4 first hole. He whiffed badly on a tap-in for bogey, and then flubbed a backhanded attempt from longer range. He'd hit 11 greens in regulation, find only one birdies, that a 4 at the 16th hole. But the damage was done as The Big Easy made it look anything but with five bogeys in the wake of the opening triple. UPDATE: GolfChannel.com reported that Els struck a spectator with his opening tee ball. "There was blood everywhere," he said. The ball hit the jaw of a male senior citizen. "I really felt bad hitting it there into the people and hurting the guy the way I did. Hopefully he’s better now. It wasn’t very nice. ... "It was a nightmare. I’d like to put it behind me. I just hope the gentleman feels better, because he looked really bad when I left him there." Jul 17 - 2:05 PM
