Tommy Gainey posted a 4-under-par 32-34=66 in his opening round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
Gainey enjoyed an incredible day on the greens today. He hit 14 in regulation and rolled in six birdies, four of which from outside 10 feet. This included conversions of 49'6" and 28'2" at the 13th and third holes, respectively. He also poured in a pair of respective par saves of 38'1" and 10'1" at the 12th and eighth holes. At the time he signed his round, he led the field in Strokes Gained-Putting, boasting a clip of over 5.000. He's two back of the early clubhouse lead.

Tommy Gainey turned in a 4-under-par 33-35=68 in his opening round of the Wells Fargo Championship for very early possession of the clubhouse lead.
Few guys could use a big week more than Gainey. He's failed to cash in eight of 13 starts and hasn't cracked a top 40. At Quail Hollow today, he hit 14 greens and poured in six birdies, four of which measuring over 10 feet. He saved his longest conversion for his last hole when his birdie attempt disappeared from 21'3" at the ninth hole. Afterwards, he revealed that he's been battling tennis elbow for which he was given a cortisone shot. "Now that I’m healthy, I’m starting to hit the ball better, starting to swing at it better," he said, "and I had a problem getting off to a slow start. But today I got off to a fast start, and I was able to keep it going. ... I’m starting to hit the ball like I know I can, and I’m just making putts now. When you make putts, you can shoot low numbers, and I feel like a low number is on the horizon for me."

Tommy Gainey finished tied for third at the 2011 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, and could use another similar performance this week in order to boost his 2012 season.
Gainey's season has been a bit of a roller coaster, as he's missed eight cuts in 12 starts. When he has seen the weekend, the results haven't been much better as he's only finished inside the top 50 once. Adding fuel to the fire, he hasn't broken 80 in his last three rounds, which included the fourth round at Harbour Town and the first two rounds of the Valero Texas Open.

Tommy Gainey shot a 3-under-par 34-34=68 in the third round of the RBC Heritage and is in position to nab his best finish of the season in the South Carolina low country.
The South Carolinian is taking advantage of being at home for the second year in a row, as he placed third in the 2011 Heritage. His 5-under 208 total almost assures him of his best finish of the season, as his previous best was a T42 at the Shell Houston Open. His third round saw him circle five birdies to two bogeys while navigating the green to a tune of a 1.545 putting average and 26 putts.
