Four-time major champion and World No. 7 Rory McIlroy stumbled to a 2-over-par 37-37=74 in the final round of the 2018 Masters, dropping three places to T5 on 9-under 279, a distant six in arrears of overnight leader and champion Patrick Reed, who shot 71.
In his fourth attempt at the career Grand Slam, the 28-year-old fell short, again. After kicking off with 69-71-65, he began three shy of playing competitor Reed. The Ulsterman mustered eight (of 14) fairways and eight greens in regulation, recording 1.67 putts per GIR. After nearly hitting his drive OB at the first, he managed a par-saver from six feet and then missed eagle at 2 from 4 feet. The tap-in birdie, which felt like bogey, was one of only three on the round versus five squares, lowlighted by missed par-savers from five feet at 5 and 11, another from seven feet at the par-5 eighth, and a 3-putt bogey at 14 from 28 feet. This is his fifth top 10 in 10 appearances and fifth straight. Overall, it's his 17th top 10 in 37 majors and second of the season in seven starts, joining his win at Bay Hill two starts ago. Eyeing his first green jacket, World No. 7 Rory McIlroy fired a week-tying-low, bogey-free, 7-under-par 31-34=65 in the third round of the 2018 Masters to post 11-under 205, up two spots to solo 2nd, three shy of 36-and 54-hole leader Patrick Reed, who he'll be paired with in the final twosome on Sunday.
The 28-year-old is chasing his fifth major title in 37 tries, first since the 2014 PGA as 54-hole leader. This is his fourth attempt at the career Grand Slam, finishing 4th, T10 and T7 in the last three Masters, respectively. The Ulsterman is also eyeing a 15th TOUR title in 138 events, second this season in seven starts. At Bay Hill two starts ago, he came from two back with a week-tying-low 64 to win by three. After opening in 69-71, the Jupiter, Florida, resident began T4, five back. Playing out of the penultimate twosome, he hit eight (of 14) fairways and 12 greens in regulation, needing just 23 total putts. McIlroy carded five birdies at holes 3, 4, 6, 15 and 18, four from between 16 and 20 feet, adding a pitch-in eagle-3 at 8 from 23 yards away. This was his 37th round at ANGC and matches his best shot in R1 in 2011. He rode that to a four-shot lead thru 54 holes but closed with 80 for T15. Apr 7 - 7:23 PM
Rory McIlroy tossed together a 1-under-par 37-34=71 during the second round of the Masters Tournament, good for an early share of the clubhouse co-lead alongside Jordan Spieth on 4-under 140.
McIlroy found just half of the possible 14 fairways but recovered nicely to pelt 12 greens in regulation. He gained some confidence early in the round with a 30 footer for birdie at the par-5 second hole. McIlroy would add another from long distance at the par-4 14th. Despite those two long-distance conversions, McIlroy reeked of disappointment after the round, saying he felt he left a few strokes out on the course with some putts that didn't drop on his way into the clubhouse. Despite his lack of perfection, McIlroy has a lot to be pleased with through 36 holes. Most importantly, he's avoided anything higher than a bogey this week. Keeping those big numbers off his card will be crucial if he wants to complete the career grand slam come Sunday afternoon. Apr 6 - 4:41 PM
Starting his bid for the career grand slam, Rory McIlroy styled a 3-under-par 35-34=69 during round one of the Masters Tournament, giving him a share of fourth place, three off the early pace set by Jordan Spieth.
McIlroy has been the king of backdoor top 10s here at Augusta National but he's gotten off to a quick start this time around. This will be his best positioning after R1 since the infamous 2011 edition where he led wire-to-wire thru 54 holes until he unraveled on Sunday. Today it was all about placement off the tee, missing just two (of 14) fairways to set up plenty of manageable approach shots. That included the opening hole where a monster drive gave him 131 yards left and he stuck it to 19 feet before splashing it home for birdie. McIlroy picked up the remainder of his birdies on the par 5s. This will go in the books as just his second opening round in the 60s here at Augusta National. Apr 5 - 7:26 PM
