Overnight leader Roberto Castro chased his opening 63 at THE PLAYERS with a 6-over-par 39-39=78 in his second round.
Even the most cynical didn't expect this from the PGA TOUR sophomore. He split 10 (of 14) fairways and hit just nine greens at TPC Sawgrass today. After a birdie-4 at the second hole, he'd fail to find another par breaker along the way, instead settling for five bogeys and a double. Castro missed three putts inside eight feet today. He signed his card sitting 3-under 141, eight strokes back of the 36-hole clubhouse lead.

Scott Stallings logged a 1-under-par 31-40=71 in his opening round of THE PLAYERS.
That's a pair of nines you don't often see linked together in a single round. Stallings started at the first hole and went birdie-birdie-birdie-birdie-birdie. The run included conversions from 35'9" at 1, 19'6" at 3 and 17'4" at 4. He'd chase it with five consecutive pars before making a mess of the par-5 11th en route to a bogey. His drive at 12 found an unplayable lie for which he took a drop and eventually swallowed a double bogey-6. After a straightforward birdie at the challenging 14th, Stallings would go on to build a snowman at the par-5 16th where he rinsed two approach shots. Therefore, his birdie conversion from 16'11" at the par-4 18th clinched the red number that seemed in the bag just five holes into his round. He's making his second visit to TPC Sawgrass, but the course doesn't care who you are of what kind of pedigree you bring. Stalling's lid-lifter was the latest proof.

Roberto Castro blistered TPC Sawgrass for a course-record-tying 31-32=63 in his opening round of THE PLAYERS.
Castro went bogey-free, splitting 13 (of 14) fairways, hitting 15 greens and circling and eagle and seven birdies. He started on the 10th hole and played the par 5s birdie-birdie-eagle-par. All 18 of his conversions disappeared from inside 10 feet. He's the third to sign for a 63 at TPC Sawgrass following Fred Couples in 1992 and Greg Norman in 1994. It also ties his personal low on the PGA TOUR, which he's carded twice before. The PGA TOUR sophomore entered the week ranked 113th in FedExCup points on the strength of three top 25s among seven paydays in 14 starts.

Roberto Castro missed the cut in his first trip to TPC Louisiana for the Zurich Classic and is back to try and improve on that history.
Castro has made just five (of 12) cuts this year, but three of those have resulted in top 25s. At 43rd in ball-striking, but just 173rd in strokes gained-putting, it's easy to understand why he's been inconsistent and what it takes for him to be a factor. It all boils down to the putter.
