Nathan Smith defeated Garrett Rank 1-up in the final of the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill.
After the duo traded a pair of early wins in today's 36-hole finale, they were all square after eight holes. Smith then took Nos. 9, 10 and 11 -- all with pars -- to go 3 up. He'd retain the lead, and sat 3 up with six holes remaining. Rank finally drew even after a par at the 31st, a birdie at the 32nd and another par at the 33rd. After halving the 34th hole, Rank failed to get up and down for par at 35, losing the hole. They halved the final hole with par 5s, clinching Smith's fourth title in this event (2003, 2009, 2010). Until today, he shared the most career wins with Jay Sigel (1983, 1985, 1987). Smith, 34, will receive a berth into the 2013 Masters as a result of today's victory. Thu, Sep 13, 2012 05:24:00 PM
