Steven Fox defeated Michael Weaver in 37 holes to emerge victorious at the 112th edition of the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Weaver was 2 up with two holes to play, but Fox went eagle-par to Weaver's birdie-bogey on the closing two holes at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado. Fox, who will be entering his senior year at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, made the cut on the number in stroke-play qualifying at 2-over-par 72-71=143. He then navigated match play with victories of 3 and 2, 1 up, 2 up, 4 and 2 and 2 up to reach the final. At the par-4 first hole in sudden death, Fox split the fairway with an iron. Weaver then tried to drive the green at the reachable par 4 but yanked his tee ball well left. He'd eventually bogey to the hole, but Fox eliminated the drama when he drilled a 15-footer for birdie. Included in the spoils are exemptions into the first three majors of 2013 as long as Fox retains his amateur status.
