It took 27 tries, but Miguel Angel Jiménez is a winner of the Open de España for the first time.
The Spaniard is ageless. He turned 50 in January, contended at the Masters (placing fourth), won in his debut on the Champions Tour and got married. Today's title is his first in his national open and 21st on the European Tour. He's the first 50something to win on the circuit, in the process extending his own record as the tour's oldest champion. MAJ is also now exempt into the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational this summer. "There's no words to describe what it means to me, you need to be into my skin but I'm not going to let you!" Jiménez quipped after eliminating Richard Green and 36- and 54-hole leader Thomas Pieters on the first playoff hole at PGA Catalunya Resort in Girona. The trio completed regulation in 4-under 284. "All the victories are special, all are unique, some of them give you more money, some less, but all of them are important. You play to win and when you make it you have to appreciate it."
