With a 7-under-par 33-32=65 on McCormick Ranch Golf Club's Pine Course in the open qualifier for the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Ki Taek Lee earned medalist honors and a spot in his first career PGA TOUR event.
If you've never heard of him, don't sweat it. The freshman at Arizona State University is currently 1,435th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Lee throttled the three-spotter site in Scottsdale for an eagle-3 (at the 18th hole, his ninth of the round) and eight birdies. Three bogeys in an OQ usually spells doom, but they has zero impact on the La Quinta (Calif.) High School product. PGA TOUR winner Chris Smith and 2013 Tour Finals grad Danny Lee secured the final two tee times into the WMPO with bogey-free, 6-under 33-33=66s. Both rolled in six birdies apiece before outlasting Kevin Kim in a playoff. (The WMPO is the only tournament of the season at which only three open qualifiers gain entry. All other events feature four-spotters.) The field at TPC Scottsdale is now complete at 132. Jan 28 - 12:34 PM
