Sebastian L. Saavedra turned in a bogey-free, 8-under-par 30-34=64 in today's open qualifier for the Barracuda Championiship at Hidden Valley Country Club in Reno, Nevada, to earn medalist honors and a berth into the tournament proper.
The 28-year-old Argentine missed the cut in his PGA TOUR debut six weeks ago at the Travelers Championship where he also four-spotted. Today's experience was arguably more memorable. After opening with a par at the par-4 10th, he birdied the par-4 11th, and then jarred his tee ball at the par-3 12th for an ace. He chased it with yet another birdie at the par-4 13th, and would go on to circle four more. Kevin Lucas also went bogey-free, but managed only six birdies for a share of runner-up honors at 6-under 32-34=66. He'll be making his first PGA TOUR start this week, as will Jesse Schutte, who carded 6-under 34-32=66 with an eagle (at the par-5 18th) and six birdies against two bogeys. Stuart L. Smith signed for a 6-under 32-34=66 (7 birdies, 1 bogey) today to secure his fourth TOUR appearance. He's yet to make a cut. The field at Montrêux Golf and Country Club is now complete at 132.
