World No. 339 Brian Gay signed for a 2-under-par 35-35=70 after today's final round of the Valero Texas Open to conclude his 15th appearance on 7-under 281, up five spots to T6 with play winding down. UPDATE: With play completed, Gay finished T6 and collected 89 FedExCup points and $200,725, easily meeting the terms of his Major Medical Extension in earnings -- with three starts remaining -- but came up 28.807 shy in FEC points.
This is the 44-year-old's third top 10 at the VTO, first since a best of T4 in 2012. It's his second top 10 of the season in 11 starts and second straight, chasing a T6 last week at the RBC Heritage. After opening laps of 68-72-71, the Texas native began in solo 11th, three adrift of 54-hole leader Kevin Chappell but just one off the overnight top 10. He conjured six (of 14) fairways and seven greens in regulation, losing 1.197 strokes off-the-tee, but gained 1.518 strokes around-the-green and 2.017 on-the-greens. The former Florida Gator squared a lone bogey-5 at nine, offset by birdies at holes 2, 3 and 11, the latter a hole-out 3 from 36'9" away. Apr 23 - 5:43 PM
