George McNeill turned in an even-par 35-37=72 in the third round of the Wells Fargo Championship and trails Phil Mickelson and Nick Watney by a stroke at 7-under 209.
McNeill was hanging around the lead most of the day, but a bogey at the par-5 15th put him on tilt. He responded with pars on 16 and 17, and stood on the 18th tee in a share of the lead with Mickelson and Watney. McNeill was the only one of the three that wasn't able to scratch out a par at the 18th, missing the green and failing to convert his 15'9" par attempt. The two-time TOUR winner has a great opportunity to nab his third title in the final round.

George McNeill answered his opening 69 at the Wells Fargo Championship with a 4-under 33-35=68 to reach the midpoint in 7-under 137, two strokes off the 36-hole clubhouse lead.
He landed 14 greens in regulation but suffered three bogeys, including a three-putt from just under 70 feet at the par-3 sixth holes. However, he circled seven birdies en route to another sub-70. His set included a 16-yard hole-out from just off the green at 9 and a tap-in at the par-3 17th where his tee ball covered the flagstick, bounced up against it and came to rest two inches from the cup.

George McNeill carded a 3-under-par 35-34=69 in his opening round of the Wells Fargo Championship, finishing two strokes back of the clubhouse co-leaders.
McNeill has grinded through a strange season. He's cashed in eight of nine starts but hadn't gone sub-70 until today's loop around Quail Hollow. He hit 15 greens in regulation and rolled in four birdies, including a conversion from 13'7" at the 11th hole, his second of the day. His longest putt that disappeared measured 13'90" for par at the ninth to conclude his round.

George McNeill will play the Zurich Classic of New Orleans after missing his first cut of the season in his last start.
McNeill opened the 2013 season by cashing in each of his first seven starts before coming up short at the Shell Houston Open. This is a nice bounce-back spot for him, making five cuts in six starts at TPC Louisiana with a T6 in 2011 the highlight. Statistically, nothing jumps up and grabs you positively or negatively regarding his 2013 performance.
