Todd Hamilton is the latest to win at Royal Troon Golf Club, host of the 145th Open Championship, and returns this week for a chance to defend that title.
Hamilton arrived at Royal Troon for the 2004 Open Championship ranked 34th on the money list, winning the Honda Classic earlier in the season to help that total. He was also 56th in the Official World Golf Ranking at the time of his victory at Royal Troon that season. Despite his moderate rankings at the time, he's still largely seen as an out-of-the-blue winner. In large part due to his career performance after the win, posting just one finish inside the top 30 in major championships since (28 starts). In the Open Championship, specifically, he's made the return trip every year since and is 3-for-11 over that stretch, a T32 in 2008 being the best. Spending his time on the Champions Tour now, Hamilton is a long shot to contend this week, but perhaps this historic venue can spark up some old memories and kick his game into gear for a few rounds.
