Steven Alker fired a 6-under-par 31-34=65 in the final round of the Cleveland Open, and then outlasted Dawie van der Walt over the course of 11 playoff holes to claim the fourth Tour victory of his career.
The final round went out in threesomes off both tees due to the threat of inclement weather, and there was a weather delay late in the morning. As it played out, it proved that threesomes were most definitely needed to finish play on Sunday due to the longest playoff in Tour history. The previous record was nine holes, which happened at the 1998 Lehigh Valley Open and again in 2009 at the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic. Alker circled eight birdies without a blemish over his first 16 holes, but finished with back-to-back bogeys to fall into the playoff at 14-under 270. The first 10 playoff holes were halved with pars before Alker broke through with a birdie on the par-4 18th. It was the fifth time the 18th hole was utilized in the playoff. With his victory, the Kiwi moves to 12th on the Tour money list after starting the week ranked 102nd. He's scheduled to compete in his second U.S. Open (T45, 2013). Jun 8 - 8:12 PM
