Nick Dougherty failed to survive the first stage of Q School at Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif., where he finished in a share of 42nd place at 3-over-par 72-75-73-71=291, eight strokes outside the cut line.
Attempting to piece his career back together, Dougherty was limited to action on the Challenge Tour this year. Thanks in part to four top 10s, he's climbed to 673rd in the world ranking. He sat as low as 1,021st on March 4, which, if said aloud and taken literally, is precisely what he did. Of course, it's still a far cry from his stint inside the top 50 in 2008, but the current direction is positive. Unfortunately, it didn't work out for the Brit this week, but former PGA TOUR member Todd Demsey was one of 20 to advance to the second stage. Demsey tied for fifth at 11-under 277, six strokes adrift of medalist Trevor Murphy. Fri, Oct 19, 2012 08:36:00 PM
