Peter Hanson carded a 2-under-par 38-32=70 in his opening round of THE PLAYERS.
This was a day he probably won't soon forget. The Swede hasn't competed since withdrawing during his second round at Harbour Town three weeks ago with a back injury, but he showed little rust on his putter for most of today's round. Hanson opened with a double bogey at the par-4 10th where he didn't find the green until his fifth shot. Four birdies ensued, including conversions from 11'8" at 11 and 42'6" and 14. The punishing par-4 18th then clipped him pretty good. He'd send two tee balls into the water along the left side of the fairway and eventually score a snowman. A bogey-5 at the fourth hole dropped him to 3-over with five to play, but he bounced back again with a birdie at 5. After a par at No. 6, he closed birdie-birdie-eagle, a stretch that began with rolls from 17'6" and 12 feet before he jarred his fairway approach from 108 yards at the par-5 ninth to reel in the red number.
