Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño has accepted Special Temporary Membership on the PGA TOUR.
It's a little odd that the Spaniard took a few weeks to make it official. He qualified for STM with a share of third place at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. This status affords him three immediate benefits. In addition to unlimited sponsor exemptions and starts, he's immediately added to the Beyond 150/Past Champions Reshuffle category. Should GFC win a tournament, all non-members FedExCup points would be rewarded retroactively. He's accumulated 278, which would slot him 70th if he were a member.

Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño followed his opening 68 at the Masters with a 2-over-par 38-36=74 in his second round to post the 36-hole clubhouse lead at 2-under 142.
GFC went out in the fourth threesome of the day and doesn't sit inside the top 10 of the leaderboard at this moment. Nevertheless, he knows he'll play the weekend for the second time in as many tries at Augusta National. He hit only 10 greens in regulation today but erased three birdies with five bogeys, including a pair to end his lap.

Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño opened the 77th Masters with a 4-under-par 34-34=68, finishing two strokes off the clubhouse lead.
The Spaniard took a couple of weeks off to prep for the season's first major. It was a great decision. He hit 13 greens and drilled home six birdies, including on each of the four par 5s. He also swallowed two bogeys, including a 5 at the last, but he signed for what it easily his lowest of five rounds in competition at Augusta National. En route to his last-place finish (of 61 that played 72 holes) in his debut last year, GFC shot 14-over 74-75-76-77=302.

Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño alerted his followers on Twitter why he elected not to tee it up at this week's Shell Houston Open.
GFC wrote: "My top ten gets me into Houston next week, but I had to turn it down as I want to be fresh for The Masters." A short-term loss may be a long-term gain as he also retweeted the PGA TOUR's tweet about him becoming eligible for Special Temporary Membership. This would lead gamers to believe that he'll accept at some point. In an article at

, he discusses that his sights are to play in the U.S. more often. "The PGA Tour School is no longer an option for us and unfortunately the European Tour is struggling so I would like to make enough money to take out ‘Temporary Membership’ in the hope of securing my PGA card for next year," he said prior to a T3 at Bay Hill. "So that’s my goal to play here more in the States on a regular basis."
