Pirates acquired INF/OF Jeff Larish from the Red Sox for cash considerations.
Larish recently signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox after being released by the Orioles. The 29-year-old owns a .224/.308/.380 batting line over 276 plate appearances in the big leagues, so he'll likely function as organizational depth. He's expected to report to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Orioles signed INF/OF Jeff Larish to a minor league contract.
The deal does not include a spring training invite. Larish, a fifth-round pick of the Tigers in 2005, batted .240/.330/.449 with 13 homers, 37 RBI and a .779 OPS over 288 plate appearances with the Phillies' Triple-A affiliate last season. The 29-year-old owns an underwhelming .224/.308/.380 batting line over 276 plate appearances in the big leagues, so look for him to serve as organizational depth for Baltimore.

Phillies signed 1B Jeff Larish to a minor league contract.
We're guessing he'll get an invite to spring training, as well. Larish, 28, put up monster numbers in the minor leagues this year, but batted just .179 with two homers and nine RBI in 75 plate appearances between the Tigers and Athletics. He's likely to begin the 2011 season at Triple-A.

The move clears a spot on the Pirates' 40-man roster for new starter A.J. Burnett. Nunez, a Rule 5 Draft selection back in December, will miss the start of the season.

Jeff Karstens (shoulder) threw three scoreless innings on two hits while striking out one in his first rehab start at Double-A Altoona Monday.
It's a good start, but Karstens will need at least a couple more outings before rejoining the Pirates rotation. We could see him in early June if all goes well.

Chris Leroux (pectoral) threw long toss from 120 feet Thursday and could begin throwing off a mound as soon as next week.
Leroux began the season on the DL with a strained right pectoral muscle. Though he said he's taking it slowly and has no timetable for a return, he reports notable improvement. June seems like a feasible goal if he keeps progressing.
