Pedro Martinez told reporters Saturday that he's planning to officially retire from baseball.
Pedro didn't throw a single pitch in 2011 and hinted in May that he was considering hanging up his cleats. He'll finish up with a remarkable 219-100 career record, a 2.93 career ERA and 3,154 career strikeouts. The 40-year-old right-hander was in the major leagues for 18 seasons and is sure to be elected to the Hall of Fame.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Pedro Martinez virtually ruled out a return to the major leagues and said he will likely retire.
He has been staying in shape down in the Dominican Republic at the Pedro Youth Academy. "I keep active because I have not announced my retirement, because that is something that takes time and you have to plan it. Plus, it is something that the Dominican people expected," Martinez said. Joe Brescia of The New York Times writes that free agent Pedro Martinez is still interested in pitching for a contender this season.
Martinez's last start came in Game Six of the 2009 World Series with the Phillies. He has been staying in shape down in the Dominican Republic at the Pedro Youth Academy. When asked about his top choices Martinez welcomed a return to the Red Sox and if there wasn't interest there the Phillies would be his choice if he returned to the National League.

The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo writes that "those in the know" think Pedro Martinez would come back to pitch the final couple months of the season "if it’s the right fit.’’
Cafardo speculates that he could wind up back in Philadelphia if the Phillies end up moving Joe Blanton. SI.com's Jon Heyman reported earlier this month that Pedro isn't working out and was looking "less and less likely" to pitch in 2011, but that doesn't mean the 39-year-old won't get the itch again. He sat out the 2010 season after posting a 3.63 ERA over nine starts for the Phils in 2009.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro on Sunday defended the club's use of a cortisone shot to treat Ryan Howard's foot last September.
Howard tore his ACL less than three weeks after receiving the shot. "I wanted to clear up some of the insinuations regarding a cortisone shot," Amaro said. "The cortisone shot was treated for some (other) issue he had. It was not part of the Achilles injury. We didn't feel it was an issue. That was resolved by the time he had his injury. One thing had nothing to do with the other." A doctor quoted by the Philadelphia Inquirer disagreed. "When it comes to the risk of an Achilles tendon tear, I'm concerned about cortisone," he said. Howard is tentatively expected to return to the Phillies sometime next month.

Thome has been sidelined for nearly a month now with a lower back strain. It's not clear when he'll be ready for an official minor league rehab assignment.

Chase Utley (knee) felt "pretty good" after fielding grounders Wednesday.
In fact, Utley felt good enough to run Thursday and plans on fielding grounders for a second straight day. "I'm trying to get to a point where when we start going for it, I feel pretty comfortable," said Utley. "I've realized over the course of this time that the more I push it and feel uncomfortable, the worse it can get. We try to make small progressions. Taking ground balls yesterday was a good sign. I felt pretty good today. I plan on doing the same." Utley is clearly making progress, but there are no immediate plans to send him on a minor league rehab assignment.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Mike Fontenot. Martinez has been on the disabled list all season after breaking a bone in his right foot during spring training.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the recovery timetable for Laynce Nix (calf) is a matter of weeks, not days.
Nix was diagnosed with a Grade 2 left calf strain on May 10, and was just recently cleared to begin exercises. "It's going to be longer than the 15 days," Nix said. "It's a pretty good tear. It's unfortunate." Nix is out indefinitely and remains without a timetable.

Worley visited Dr. James Andrews earlier this week, who confirmed the Phillies' diagnosis of a bone chip and inflammation in his elbow. The 24-year-old right-hander may require offseason surgery, but he'll try to pitch through the condition for now. He's slated to play catch again Friday and will slowly ramp up his throwing program from there.

He'll be shut down for three weeks but is not a candidate for surgery right now. Herndon gave up two runs in two innings during his most recent appearance Sunday and owns a 4.70 ERA and 8/1 K/BB ratio over 7 2/3 innings this season. The Phillies will make a corresponding roster move Tuesday.
