Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports that Tim Wakefield has decided to retire.

He'll officially announce his retirement at a press conference later Friday. Wakefield, 45, played 19 major league seasons and retires with an even 200 wins to go along with a 4.41 ERA and 1.35 WHIP for the Pirates and Red Sox. He wanted to return to the Sox for a 20th season, but they weren't willing to offer him a deal and the knuckleballer has decided to hang up his cleats rather than accept a minor league deal elsewhere. LF	1	Carl Crawford D.L. Carl Crawford (wrist, elbow) could start swinging a bat when the Red Sox return home this weekend. That's good, but the bigger test will be when he resumes throwing, and it's not clear when that will happen. Crawford originally went on the DL due to his recovery from wrist surgery, but he later suffered a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow, and that's the bigger issue. If all goes well, he could be back sometime in July. May 23
	2	Cody Ross D.L. Red Sox placed OF Cody Ross on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left foot. Ross was optimistic that he might be able to avoid the disabled list Tuesday when speaking with reporters, but a second opinion on the MRI results of his foot dispelled any hope that his fracture was from a previous injury. The 31-year-old outfielder could need around six weeks of recovery time. Scott Podsednik has been called up from Triple-A Pawtucket in a corresponding move. May 22

CF	1	Jacoby Ellsbury D.L. Red Sox manager Ben Cherington said Jacoby Ellsbury (shoulder) could rejoin the team by the first week of July at the earliest. It's really a rough timetable, as Ellsbury has yet to resume baseball-related activities, and we won't have a better idea about his status until that happens. The range of motion in his shoulder has improved, but all he's done is weight-bearing exercises to this point. May 23

RF	1	Ryan Sweeney D.L. Ryan Sweeney (concussion) has yet to be cleared for any baseball-related activities. "Sweeney has no activity," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "[We need to] allow [his] symptoms to subside." It's not surprising, given that Sweeney was just placed on the DL Tuesday. He's eligible to return on May 28, but it's up in the air as to whether he'll be ready at that time. May 23
	2	Darnell McDonald D.L. Darnell McDonald (oblique) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A Pawtucket. McDonald, who is working his way back from a strained oblique, just began swinging a bat earlier this week. He is eligible to return from the disabled list Sunday, but we likely won't see him back with the Red Sox until the middle of next week. May 24
	3	Ryan Kalish D.L. Ryan Kalish (shoulder) is ready to begin playing in extended spring training games in Fort Myers. Kalish is currently working his way back from surgery last November to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. If all goes well, it's possible he'll be ready to join a minor league affiliate in mid-June. Given all the injuries in the Red Sox outfield, he could be a factor during the second half of the season. 	6	Aaron Cook D.L. The wound on Aaron Cook's left knee has yet to fully heal, and he will not be allowed to pitch until it does. Cook has had the stitches in his knee removed and reportedly was allowed to throw a bullpen session over this past weekend. It sounds like the Red Sox are scaling back his activity, though. His rehab will go quickly once he's cleared to throw again. May 22
	7	Daisuke Matsuzaka D.L. Daisuke Matsuzaka will make his next minor league rehab start Saturday at Triple-A Pawtucket. Matsuzaka was shut down for about a week with pain in the side of his neck but is now feeling better. He'll need to make at least two more rehab starts before the Red Sox consider activating him from the disabled list. May 24
	8	John Lackey D.L. John Lackey (recovery from elbow surgery) opted against attending Red Sox Opening Day. Team player. Considering the reception he was likely to receive, however, we don't blame him. Five months removed from undergoing Tommy John surgery, Lackey isn't known to have resumed throwing. Six months shy of his 34th birthday, Lackey is making $15.25 million not to pitch this season, and is due another $15.25 million in 2013 after posting a 4.40 ERA in 2011. It's perhaps the worst contract ever handed out by former Red Sox GM Theo Epstein. Apr 13

	9	Bobby Jenks D.L. Bobby Jenks posted bail Friday after being arrested on five charges, four of which that were related to driving under the influence. According to Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal, Jenks was charged with one count of driving under the influence, three counts of driving under the influence and damage to property and one count of leaving the scene of a crash involving damage to property. The big right-hander dealt with lots of off-the-field issues during his minor league days but had been relatively well behaved since making to the majors. He was already slated to miss the first half of the season after undergoing two back surgeries. Mar 23
	10	Chris Carpenter D.L. Red Sox placed RHP Chris Carpenter on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury. Carpenter is scheduled to undergo surgery soon to remove a bone spur from his throwing elbow. The 26-year-old right-hander will be out of commission for a couple months. Apr 4
