Although he says he'll consider a comeback if his shoulder starts to feel better, Robb Nen has decided to retire.
This doesn't really change things at all, but assuming that he is done, he finishes his career with 314 saves and a 2.98 ERA in 643 appearances -- all but four of them coming in relief. He never blew fewer than five save chances in his years as a full-time closer, but he was almost always very good. In 1998, he had a 1.52 ERA, 40 saves and 110 strikeouts in 88 2/3 IP. In 2000, he had a 1.50 ERA and 41 saves. He led the NL in saves with 45 in 2001.

Free agent Robb Nen, who hoped to pitch this year after missing two seasons with a torn rotator cuff, has had to stop throwing because of a sore shoulder.
''He's had some setbacks. He's just shut it down, pretty much,'' said Rockies special assistant Marcel Lachemann. ''He's just going to shut it down, let his arm see how it feels. He's tried everything. He's rested, done everything else. He was going along pretty good, then it started bothering him again.'' Nen is probably done, but there is the chance he could join a team during the season if his shoulder feels any better.

The Cubs are talking to Robb Nen about a contract even though they don't expect him to be ready for the start of the season.
The Rockies are also interested. Nen is in no hurry to pick a team after missing two years with shoulder problems.

Free agent Robb Nen (shoulder) recently threw off the mound back-to-back days without discomfort.
We suppose that's a good sign. The Rockies are trying to sign Nen and give him a chance to compete for the closer's role. However, Nen may wait until next month before making any decisions.

Abreu began the season on the disabled list with a strained quad. The 28-year-old could serve as a utility infielder with the big club once he's back to full health.
