Juan Castro has announced his retirement.
Castro will remain in the Dodgers organization, joining the front office as a special assistant. The 38-year-old played 17 major league seasons, which is quite an accomplishment given that he finishes with a career batting line of .229/.269/.327 and just 36 home runs over 1,103 games.

Juan Castro is mulling retirement.
The 38-year-old was designated for assignment by the Dodgers earlier this week. He's cleared waivers but has yet to decide on an assignment to Triple-A, as he could just hang up his cleats instead.

Castro spent a little under a month in the big leagues, collecting four hits in 14 at-bats while serving primarily as a late-innings defensive replacement. The 38-year-old is likely to pass through waivers and wind up back in the Dodgers organization.

Dodgers purchased the contract of INF Juan Castro from Triple-A Albuquerque.
He'll take the place of Ivan DeJesus Jr. on the active roster. Castro, 38, broke into the majors with the Dodgers way back in 1995 and is mostly known for his defensive ability. He can safely be ignored in fantasy leagues.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Carl Crawford's left hamstring strain is "fairly significant" and the outfielder will be out longer than 15 days.
Mattingly had said previously that he didn't think Crawford would miss as much as a month, so we're probably looking at around a three-week absence. Scott Van Slyke will continue seeing the bulk of the playing time in left field while Crawford is out.

Dodgers placed OF Scott Van Slyke on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder bursitis.
Van Slyke initially suffered the injury in late May but had been playing through it. It's poor timing for Van Slyke, as he had been slated to receive regular at-bats while Carl Crawford and Matt Kemp were out. It's not clear how long he'll be sidelined.

Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said on SiriusXM's MLB Network Radio on Tuesday that Matt Kemp (hamstring) is currently running at "75 percent without pain."
Kemp is making progress, but there's no timetable for him to begin a rehab assignment. The Dodgers have already ruled out his return until at least June 24, but it sounds like it will come later than that.

Josh Beckett said he'll undergo season-ending surgery if rest and rehab for a nerve issue in his pitching arm doesn't work.
The right-hander noted that he's "absolutely" confident he'll pitch this season, but there's a level of uncertainty involved. He'll be shut down for the next four weeks before trying to throw again. If Beckett does ultimately need an operation, he expects to be ready for next season.

The move clears a spot for Scott Van Slyke on the 40-man roster. Billingsley had season-ending Tommy John surgery last month and will likely miss the early part of 2014.

He allowed one hit, no walks, and had five strikeouts. Capuano, currently on the DL with a left lat strain, is expected to rejoin the Dodgers' rotation on June 19 against the Yankees.

Elbert had a pair of surgeries on his elbow over the offseason, but obviously neither of them wound up working. The Dodgers are giving him a 12-16 month timetable, so it's possible he could miss all of 2014, as well.
