Matt Morris has decided to retire after being released by the Pirates.
"It's over and I'm happy where I am right now," Morris said. "In my heart, I'm happy. At the end, it all came to a head very quickly, but I've had a great career. It was time to move on and, obviously, the Pirates felt the same way." Morris went 121-92 with a 3.98 ERA in 11 seasons, including 0-4 with a 9.67 ERA this year.

Not a surprise, but still a tough blow for the Pirates who are going to have to write him an $11 million check. He was 0-4 with a 9.67 ERA in five starts this year. "Matt Morris has been a true professional," said manager John Russell. "He's had a great career. He wanted to help us win, and it just wasn't happening." Phil Dumatrait is going to take his spot in the rotation.

Matt Morris got absolutely rocked by the Phillies Saturday.
Morris's poor pitching wasn't helped by the Pirates' awful defense, as they committed two errors in a five run first inning. Morris was lifted in the second inning after giving up an RBI single to Geoff Jenkins. He moves to 0-4 with a 9.67 ERA and didn't do anything to calm talks of his release.

Team president Frank Coonelly said Tuesday that the Pirates would consider buying out the contract of an underperforming veteran, but added that the team is not focused on potentially doing that with Matt Morris.
Morris is making slightly over $10 million this season and will be owed a $1 million buyout if the team doesn't exercise its option on him for 2009. "He is not pitching up to his standards or our expectations, but he is still working very hard ... to regain his effectiveness," Coonelly said. "We are working equally hard to make him an effective member of our staff and have not given up on him."

d'Arnaud has been sidelined since undergoing left thumb surgery late in spring training. He figures to need a few weeks' worth of rehab at-bats but could be optioned to Triple-A after that.

James McDonald (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona on May 27.
That's assuming he gets through bullpen sessions on Tuesday and Friday with no issues. McDonald is slated to go four innings and/or throw 65 pitches for Altoona, so he'll need at least one additional rehab start before being activated. He's not a given to rejoin the rotation once healthy.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Thursday that Charlie Morton (elbow, shoulder) will make three more minor league rehab starts.
Morton's rehab from Tommy John surgery was recently halted due to some shoulder soreness, but he returned to game action Thursday with Double-A Altoona and gave up two runs in four innings. If all goes well, he could join the Pirates' rotation in the early part of June.

Karstens, currently working his way back from shoulder inflammation, gave up one run in three innings Monday in his first rehab outing with High-A Bradenton. He could join the Pirates by early June, though it isn't clear what his role will be.
