Geoff Jenkins will announce his retirement from the game of baseball Friday at Milwaukee's Miller Park.
Jenkins will finish up as a .275/.344/.490 career hitter with 221 home runs, 733 RBI and 1293 hits. A first round pick of the Brewers back in 1995, he was named to one All-Star Game and played 11 professional seasons.

Free agent outfielder Geoff Jenkins acknowledged Saturday that he's likely going to retire soon.
Jenkins drew little interest this offseason after managing no at-bats in 2009 and hitting just .246/.301/.392 in 2008. "There were some calls (in the spring) but they were to go to Triple-A," said the 35-year-old. "That just wasn't in my heart." He has yet to officially file retirement papers.

ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick has learned that outfielder Geoff Jenkins wants to play in 2010 and has been working out for several months.
Jenkins was released by the Phillies prior to the start of the 2009 season and was unable to land a deal with any MLB club. He hit .246/.301/.392 with nine homers in 2008 and is now 35 years of age.

Phillies released outfielder Geoff Jenkins.
Signed to a two-year, $13 million contract last offseason, Jenkins lost his starting job to Jayson Werth and is now completely out of the Phillies' plans after hitting just .246/.301/.392 last season. He still has some value as a platoon player or bench bat, but at 34 years old Jenkins is likely done as a regular and the Phillies have the similarly skilled Matt Stairs around to take his at-bats.

Ruiz will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday or Saturday. He'll play two games there, rest a day and then play two more at Double-A Reading before being activated. The veteran backstop has been sidelined since May 19 with a right hamstring strain.

Utley took batting practice with his Phillies teammates on Friday and Saturday at Coors Field, reporting no issues with his right oblique. If he indeed starts playing in rehab games Tuesday, he should be back on Philadelphia's active 25-man roster by the end of this week.

The move clears a spot for Michael Martinez on the 40-man roster. It won't have any impact on Halladay's timeline, as he had shoulder surgery earlier this month and is unlikely to make it back until late August at the earliest.
