Carlos Guillen has announced his retirement.
The news comes as a bit of a shock. Guillen agreed to a minor league contract this past winter with the Mariners and had a good chance of claiming a backup infield job this spring in camp. He finishes with 1,331 career hits, 124 career homers and a .285/.355/.443 career batting line. The 36-year-old played for only the Mariners and Tigers during his 14-year major league career.

Carlos Guillen (calf) was cleared to resume taking batting practice Monday in Mariners camp.
Guillen sat out the past three days due to mild tightness in his calf. The 36-year-old is aiming to win a spot on Seattle's Opening Day roster as a backup infielder.

Manager Eric Wedge said he expects Guillen to sit out on Sunday, as well. The 36-year-old can't be counted on as an everyday player anymore, but figures to be useful in a part-time role with the Mariners.

Mariners signed INF Carlos Guillen to a minor league contract.
The deal includes a spring training invite. Guillen, who previously played with Seattle from 1998-2003, batted just .232/.265/.368 with three homers, 13 RBI and a .633 OPS over 102 plate appearances last season with the Tigers. The 36-year-old can't be counted on as an everyday player anymore, but the switch-hitter could be a decent bat off the bench.

Franklin Gutierrez (heel) threw and ran Wednesday afternoon in front of Mariners trainers.
Gutierrez is expected to begin playing in extended spring training games in Arizona on Sunday. After about a week of that, he should be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment. The 29-year-old center fielder is on track for an early-June return to the major leagues.

George Sherrill is scheduled to undergo Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery in early May.
He's out for the year and may just decide to call it quits. Sherrill hasn't pitched since the Mariners' Opening Day series in Japan. The veteran southpaw had a 3.00 ERA in 36 innings last year for the Braves and agreed to a one-year, $1.1 million contract with Seattle in December. He lasted 1 1/3 innings. The Mariners will go with Charlie Furbush and Lucas Luetke for left-handed relief in the short-term.
