Recovered from what could have been a career-ending vertebrae injury, David Newhan hit a single Monday in his first professional at-bat in two years.
Regarding Newhan's potential role, Padres manager Bud Black said, "I don't know where we stand with him. We'll have to see how the roster sets up, see how he is physically and where he is. But he's a veteran guy who will certainly be in the back of our minds." Certainly not a ringing endorsement. And not surprising given Newhan's long hiatus, age (37), and lukewarm career batting line (.253/.312/.380). He is more likely to end up at Triple-A than on the major league roster.
