Jason LaRue told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Saturday that he will retire due to concerns over his season-ending concussion.
LaRue was kicked in the face multiple times by Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto during a scuffle in Cincinnati back in August. He's still experiencing headaches and nausea, something he likened to seasickness. "It's one of the hardest things in the world to explain," said the catcher. "You don't feel right. ... I'm done. It's a simple decision." The 36-year-old is likely to officially file retirement papers this offseason. He had a .231/.315/.396 career batting line over 11-plus seasons of professional baseball.

This means he really is done for the season. LaRue suffered a concussion when he was kicked in the head by Reds' pitcher Johnny Cueto last week. Barring a trade for a veteran, Bryan Anderson will continue to function as the primary backup for Yadier Molina.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak didn't dismiss the possibility that Jason LaRue (concussion) could miss the rest of the season.
"I’m concerned. I don’t think we’ve crossed the bridge yet to determine if he’s going to miss the remaining part of the season," said Mozeliak. "But given the fact that we’re now 10 days out (edit: eight days) from that injury, it’s concerning. Right now I think we’re just going to let him have some rest and get away from this a little and he’ll be reevaluated early next week." LaRue suffered a concussion when he was kicked in the head by Johnny Cueto during a benches-clearing melee last Tuesday. As of now, Bryan Anderson is the primary backup for Yadier Molina.

Cardinals placed C Jason LaRue on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 4, with a concussion.
LaRue took the brunt of Johnny Cueto's kung-fu action during Tuesday night's benches-clearing melee against the Reds. Steve Hill will function as the primary backup for Yadier Molina during his absence.

Jaime Garcia was diagnosed with a 30-40 percent tear of the labrum in his left shoulder.
Dr. James Andrews recommended surgery and reportedly expressed amazement that Garcia pitched as well as he did earlier this season under the circumstances. The Cardinals' team doctor will perform the shoulder procedure. It's safe to say that Garcia will not contribute in a meaningful way for the rest of the 2013 season.

Jake Wesbrook (elbow) played catch on flat ground on Friday.
The encouraging news is that he said his elbow felt fine afterwards. He attempted to throw a from a mound for the first time on Wednesday, but had to cut the session short after feeling lingering pain in his elbow. He's not on a specific throwing program at the moment, they'll continue to play it day-by-day based on how he's feeling. He's still not anywhere close to returning to the rotation.

Chris Carpenter (shoulder, neck) threw a successful bullpen session on Friday.
The Cardinals are considering allowing Carpenter to throw to live hitters on Tuesday as the next step in his recovery. While he's far from a sure thing, it looks like he's making tangible progress toward joining the Cardinals' rotation. Assuming no setbacks, he could return around the end of June.

Fernando Salas received a shot Thursday to help the inflammation in his right shoulder.
Salas doesn't have any structural damage, but the Cardinals will shut him down for a while and hope the shot helps to speed his recovery along. There's no timetable for his return.
