Gil Meche said in a statement Tuesday that his decision to retire was based on the need for more surgery on his right shoulder.
"As a competitor my entire life this is the hardest decision that I've ever faced, but it's not fair to me, my family or the Kansas City Royals that I attempt to pitch anymore," the 32-year-old wrote in a statement. "I came into this game as a starting pitcher and unfortunately my health, more accurately, my shoulder, has deteriorated to the point where surgery would be the only option and at this stage of my life." He is leaving $12 million on the table.

Gil Meche has announced his retirement from the game of baseball.
A major surprise, given that his salary this season would have been a whopping $12 million. The 32-year-old Meche did not give an exact reason for his sudden retirement, but it might have something to do with his chronic shoulder problems. He made only nine starts last season and tallied only 61 2/3 innings of work while posting an ugly 5.67 ERA and 1.67 WHIP.

Royals activated RHP Gil Meche from the 60-day disabled list.
Meche hasn't appeared in a major league game since May 25 due to lingering shoulder problems. He has scaled back his expectations for September and will return in middle relief. Meche gave up one run over 4 2/3 innings in three appearances out of the bullpen with Triple-A Omaha. The Royals still have him under contract for $12 million next season.

Jarrod Dyson has been diagnosed with a mild high ankle sprain and is expected to be sidelined for 2-to-4 weeks.
The 28-year-old speedster had been off to a decent start this season, hitting .268/.286/.561 with a homer, eight RBI and six stolen bases through his first 41 at-bats. While the timetable for recovery is short, any injury to the ankle is something to very closely monitor for a player such as Dyson who derives all of his fantasy value from his speed. David Lough could be worth a look in very deep leagues while Dyson is out.
