Diamondbacks signed INF John McDonald to a two-year, $3 million contract.
McDonald gets $1.5 million in 2012 and another $1.5 million in 2013. The 37-year-old batted just .169/.222/.203 in 63 plate appearances after joining the D'Backs in late August, but he's a pretty slick defensive infielder and should be a reliable utilityman in 2012. If Stephen Drew (ankle) isn't back to 100 percent by Opening Day, the veteran McDonald could even draw some starts in the early going at shortstop.

Diamondbacks acquired SS John McDonald and 2B Aaron Hill from the Blue Jays for 2B Kelly Johnson.
McDonald was mostly a throw-in, but he'll provide needed depth at shortstop for the Diamondbacks, who will be without Stephen Drew (fractured ankle) down the stretch. McDonald, 36, has a weak .606 career OPS. He'll become a free agent this winter.

Blue Jays activated INF John McDonald from the 15-day disabled list.
McDonald missed around two weeks with a hamstring strain. He has a .190/.252/.295 slash line this year and will return to his role as a utility infielder.

John McDonald (hamstring) is expected to return from the disabled list Friday.
McDonald is scheduled to play nine innings Thursday with High-A Dunedin before joining the Jays on Friday in Cincinnati. The Blue Jays are expected to drop a pitcher from their current eight-man bullpen in a corresponding roster move. Early speculation is that Octavio Dotel could be the odd-man out.

Montero suffered a left groin strain Monday while attempting to snag a foul pop-up and hasn't played since. Henry Blanco will start behind the plate on Wednesday night against the Dodgers and left-hander Ted Lilly.

Stephen Drew (ankle) will play in one or two extended spring training games before beginning a rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno.
The D'Backs had hoped that Drew could start a rehab assignment Sunday, but he's dealing with a bit of soreness in his surgically-repaired ankle and the team doesn't want to push the envelope. Assuming he does indeed begin playing for Reno soon, Drew should be ready to rejoin the big club in early June.

Diamondbacks transferred INF Geoff Blum from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
Blum has been out since the middle of April because of a torn oblique muscle, and can now be ruled out for all of May. The veteran infielder opened the year 1-for-11.

Hudson allowed two runs over five innings Monday night in a rehab start at Triple-A Reno and was given clearance to return to the major leagues on Tuesday afternoon. The 24-year-old right-hander has been on the disabled list since April 19 with a right shoulder impingement. He should be activated in all fantasy leagues this weekend.

Takashi Saito threw a 21-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, his first since aggravating his right calf injury back on April 20.
It was clearly a pretty significant aggravation since he didn't get on a mound again for three and a half weeks. The D'Backs haven't offered a timetable on Saito, but he'll likely need a handful of successful bullpen sessions before being sent on a rehab assignment.
