A.J. Burnett allowed one run over seven innings but took a no-decision as the Pirates lost to the Astros in extra innings on Saturday.
Burnett had the win stolen from him when Mark Melancon surrendered the lead an inning later, but it doesn't take away from his performance. Burnett scattered five hits and four walks in the outing, striking out seven. The right-hander continues his stellar post-Yankees career, as he now owns a 2.57 ERA and 1.10 WHIP on the year. He'll toe the slab again Friday against the Brewers.

A.J. Burnett allowed two runs and two hits in seven innings Wednesday in a loss to the Mariners.
Burnett struck out nine today, but he couldn't outduel Felix Hernandez in falling to 3-3 on the season. The go-ahead homer he allowed to Jesus Montero in the seventh inning today was the first surrendered by him in five starts.

A.J. Burnett turned in another stellar performance on Friday, punching out nine in a victory over the Nationals.
Burnett surrendered just one run on five hits over his seven innings of work. The only blemish on his evening came on an RBI single off the bat of Danny Espinosa in the fourth inning. With the victory, Burnett improves to 3-0 on the season and lowers his ERA to a sparkling 2.57. He’ll carry a highly impressive 57/15 K/BB ratio into Wednesday’s home tilt against the Mariners.

A.J. Burnett held the Cardinals to two runs over six innings Saturday to earn his second win.
Burnett is now 2-2 with a superb 2.83 ERA and 1.17 WHIP through six starts this season. He gave up a run in a shaky first inning Saturday but was fairly solid the rest of the way, yielding only one additional St. Louis tally. Burnett faces a tough test next week at home against the Nationals, but he's a must-start at the moment in mixed and NL-only fantasy formats.

James McDonald (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona on May 27.
That's assuming he gets through bullpen sessions on Tuesday and Friday with no issues. McDonald is slated to go four innings and/or throw 65 pitches for Altoona, so he'll need at least one additional rehab start before being activated. He's not a given to rejoin the rotation once healthy.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Thursday that Charlie Morton (elbow, shoulder) will make three more minor league rehab starts.
Morton's rehab from Tommy John surgery was recently halted due to some shoulder soreness, but he returned to game action Thursday with Double-A Altoona and gave up two runs in four innings. If all goes well, he could join the Pirates' rotation in the early part of June.

Karstens, currently working his way back from shoulder inflammation, gave up one run in three innings Monday in his first rehab outing with High-A Bradenton. He could join the Pirates by early June, though it isn't clear what his role will be.

Contreras is permitted to stay on the bereavement list for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven. The Pirates have called up Jared Hughes to replace him on the active roster.
