Mark Mulder told Jeff Fletcher of AOL Fanhouse that he has retired.
"I guess I am [retired]," Mulder told Fletcher. "I haven't touched a baseball since February." Mulder, who hasn't appeared in a major league game since the 2008 season, was linked in talks with the Brewers over the winter, however nothing materialized. The southpaw wraps up his injury-plagued career with a record of 103-60 to go along with a 4.18 ERA and 1.34 WHIP. A two-time All-Star, Mulder finished second in the American League Cy Young award voting in 2001 when he won 21 games at the age of 23. He's just another case of what could have been.

Mark Mulder confirmed to the San Francisco Chronicle Monday evening that he is not retiring from baseball.
Mulder told the Chronicle's Susan Slusser that his shoulder "just doesn't rotate quite right" and that he is taking a step back from the game, but the 32-year-old southpaw is not ready to fully call it quits. He's drawn interest this winter from the Brewers and may try to ink a midseason deal.

According to a report by San Francisco Chronicle writer Susan Slusser, Gregg Clifton, Mark Mulder's agent, is saying reports of his client's retirement are not correct.
Clifton says: "Not accurate. Mark has not made a decision." The news of Mulder's retirement was first reported by Lance Allan of TMJ4 in Milwaukee on Sunday night and then confirmed by Brewers pitching coach Rick Peterson. Injuries have derailed Mulder's career, but it isn't out of the question for him to take a minor league contract and embark on a long journey back. Stay tuned.

Brewers pitching coach Rick Peterson has confirmed that left-hander Mark Mulder has decided to retire, reports Adam McCalvy of MLB.com.
It was first reported by Lance Allan of TMJ4 in Milwaukee on Sunday night. The 32-year-old left-hander has decided to hang it up rather than attempt a comeback on a minor league contract. Mulder retires after nine big league seasons with the Athletics and Cardinals, compiling a career record of 103-60 to go along with a 4.18 ERA and 1.34 WHIP. Mulder was a two-time All-Star and finished second in the American League Cy Young award voting in 2001 when he won 21 games as a 23 year old. It's a real shame injuries had to cut his career short.

The move was made in order to clear room on the 40-man roster for the addition of Carlos Martinez. Furcal is out for the season following Tommy John surgery.

David Freese (thumb) is out of the Cardinals' lineup again Wednesday.
He's now missed three straight games due to swelling around his right thumb where he needed three stitches for a small cut. The Cards are worried that cut could split open, so they're playing things cautiously. Freese could be back in there Friday after the off day Thursday. Matt Carpenter is at third again Wednesday, with Daniel Descalso covering second.

Jaime Garcia was diagnosed with a 30-40 percent tear of the labrum in his left shoulder.
Dr. James Andrews recommended surgery and reportedly expressed amazement that Garcia pitched as well as he did earlier this season under the circumstances. The Cardinals' team doctor will perform the shoulder procedure. It's safe to say that Garcia will not contribute in a meaningful way for the rest of the 2013 season.

Jake Westbrook had to stop his bullpen session Wednesday after 20 pitches due to pain in his right elbow.
Well, that's not good. Westbrook felt fine while playing catch, but this was the first time since landing on the disabled list that he tried to throw from a mound. The right-hander isn't sure what the next step is, but obviously he's not going to be back anytime soon.

CBS Sports' Scott Miller reports that the Cardinals are hoping that Chris Carpenter (shoulder, neck) is able to join the starting rotation in late June or early July.
Carpenter was originally considered unlikely to pitch this season due to a lingering nerve condition in his shoulder and neck. However, he has been encouraged by his throwing program and has suddenly progressed from an option for the bullpen to the starting rotation. The 38-year-old has already stretched himself out to 80 pitches and could begin facing live hitters next week if all goes well. The Cardinals aren't counting on anything, but his unexpected return would provide a major boost for a club which will likely be missing Jaime Garcia (shoulder) for a while.

Fernando Salas received a shot Thursday to help the inflammation in his right shoulder.
Salas doesn't have any structural damage, but the Cardinals will shut him down for a while and hope the shot helps to speed his recovery along. There's no timetable for his return.
