Cardinals transferred SS Rafael Furcal from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
The move was made in order to clear room on the 40-man roster for the addition of Carlos Martinez. Furcal is out for the season following Tommy John surgery.

Cardinals placed SS Rafael Furcal on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.
Furcal, of course, is recovering from Tommy John surgery and will miss the 2013 season. The Cards are rolling with Pete Kozma at shortstop.

Rafael Furcal underwent successful Tommy John surgery Wednesday.
Furcal also had a bone spur removed from his right elbow. The veteran infielder will miss all of the 2013 season, with the Cardinals filling in with Pete Kozma at shortstop.

Rafael Furcal will undergo Tommy John surgery next Wednesday in Pensacola, Florida.
The operation will be performed by Dr. James Andrews. Furcal's rehab will last 6-8 months, and he hopes his next game action will be in the Dominican Winter League, where he'll likely play second base. The Cardinals will go into the season with Pete Kozma as their shortstop.

Cardinals placed LHP Jaime Garcia on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain.
Garcia has been dealing with shoulder issues for over a year and will visit Dr. James Andrews to try to get some answers. Surgery could ultimately be the course taken. The Cardinals are calling up reliever Mitchell Boggs on Saturday to fill their vacant roster spot but will have to add a new starting pitcher soon. Maybe 2012 first-rounder Michael Wacha will get a chance.

Westbrook made 25 throws from 60 feet and said he felt good. The right-hander hasn't recovered as quickly as hoped from inflammation in his right elbow, requiring a pair of injections. He's expected to miss at least a couple more starts.

Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Chris Carpenter is conditioning himself to be a starter.
When it was initially revealed that Carpenter was going to attempt a comeback this season, the general assumption was that he would be aiming to join the St. Louis bullpen. But the veteran right-hander is stretching himself out in case a spot opens up in the Cardinals' starting rotation. The remarkable story continues.
