David Eckstein's agent denied reports that his client is retiring.
"If the right opportunity arises, he will play," Ryan Gleichowski said. Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reported over the weekend that Eckstein had officially decided to retire. Jon Heyman tweeted Sunday that Eckstein had the opportunity to play for the Mariners last season, but opted against it. The 37-year-old didn't play in 2011. The former World Series MVP has played 10 seasons and has a .280/.345/.355 career batting line.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that David Eckstein has officially decided to retire.
Eckstein, 37, didn't play in 2011 but said at midseason that he'd consider playing again in the right situation. But, he's decided to hang up his cleats even though there were some teams willing to offer him a minor league contract. The former World Series MVP played 10 seasons and finishes with a .280/.345/.355 career batting line.

David Eckstein said he doesn't consider himself retired and would possibly return in the "right situation."
"It totally has to be the right situation, but when you say that, it’s like you’re disrespecting the clubs that have talked to you," Eckstein said. "This goes so much deeper than you guys will ever know." Eckstein, 36, said he had plenty of offers last offseason and was contacted by the Dodgers during spring training but simply "made a decision not to play." It's a real longshot that he would play this season, but perhaps he might get the itch next offseason.

The Dodgers considered signing free agent infielder David Eckstein during spring training but were told that it would take a one-year, $2 million contract.
With Rafael Furcal out at least a month due to a fractured thumb, there's a chance that the Dodgers will revisit talks with Eckstein. But he's going to have to lower his price considerably to make it work. The 36-year-old is a poor defender and batted just .267/.321/.326 last season.

Suspended
Yasmani Grandal will begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Tucson.
Grandal is still serving his 50-game suspension for a positive PED test, but he is allowed to begin a 10-game minor league assignment. The 24-year-old backstop is eligible to join the Padres on May 28 and may split playing time with Nick Hundley upon his return.

Logan Forsythe (foot) took batting practice on the field Thursday.
It's the first time he's done so since plantar fasciitis in his right foot sent him to the DL prior to the season. Forsythe also took ground balls before Thursday's game. "He's on the field doing baseball activities stuff, so he's on the way back," Padres manager Bud Black said. "He's on the mend." The team hasn't revealed a timetable for Forsythe, but he should be ready sometime next month if all goes well.

Cameron Maybin (wrist) could begin a rehab assignment Friday.
Maybin was recently cleared to resume hitting activities and hasn't had any setbacks. On the disabled list since April 17, he's now close to returning to the Padres. Maybin was hitting just .091/.167/.121 with no home runs prior to the injury but offers plenty of fantasy potential when he's healthy.

Clayton Richard (illness) will make a second rehab start with Triple-A Tucson.
Richard struck out eight over six innings of one-run ball Thursday for Tucson, but the Padres want him to have another tune-up. "He feels good about where he is right now, how his arm feels and how he feels physically in general, from the whole bad virus he contracted," manager Bud Black said. Assuming Richard feels fine in his next outing, he could rejoin the rotation as soon as next weekend.

Cory Luebke (elbow) has had his throwing program stopped for the second time this year in his attempt to return from Tommy John surgery.
Luebke was shut down in early March before resuming sessions of catch on April 1, and he had progressed to throwing off a mound before this latest setback. Obviously none of this bodes well for his mission to return to live major league games by the All-Star break.

Wieland, currently on the 60-day disabled list, is nine months removed from Tommy John surgery and will continued to be moved along slowly. If he can avoid setbacks, Wieland should be game-ready sometime after the All-Star break.
