Jack Wilson has retired from baseball.
"My wife Julie and our kids and I made that decision together, that this season was going to be my last," Wilson told Trib Total Media on Tuesday. "We’re retiring officially." The 34-year-old infielder was a .265/.306/.366 career hitter over parts of 12 major league seasons. He played for the Pirates, Mariners and Braves.

Braves released INF Jack Wilson.
Wilson hasn't played in over six weeks due to a dislocated right pinkie finger. He was reportedly aiming to return in September, but now Paul Janish and Tyler Pastornicky will continue to split playing time at shortstop until Andrelton Simmons (finger) is ready to return.

Jack Wilson (finger) is aiming to return from the disabled list on September 1.
Wilson recently had a setback with his dislocated right pinkie and is unable to properly grip a bat or a ball. However, he's slated to receive a cortisone shot Sunday and hopes that will allow him to restart his rehab assignment the following weekend.

More should be known about his potential return date after Monday's exam. Wilson has been sidelined since mid-July with a dislocated right pinkie.

Brandon Beachy (elbow) will make his first official minor league rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Gwinnett.
Beachy was cleared after he threw 29 pitches over two innings Tuesday during a start in extended spring training. He's expected to make around five starts in the minors, which puts him on pace to join the Braves around the anniversary of his Tommy John surgery on June 21. He's well worth stashing in most fantasy leagues.

Jonny Venters underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery on Thursday afternoon.
It's the second time he's had the procedure in his baseball career. Venters can now be ruled out for the remainder of the 2013 season and is also likely to miss the first couple months of the 2014 campaign. It's obviously a pretty big loss for the Atlanta bullpen.

An MRI taken Saturday on Eric O'Flaherty's left arm revealed a torn ulnar collateral ligament.
That's the injury that almost always leads to Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. O'Flaherty will visit Dr. James Andrews next week and is likely out for the year. The Atlanta bullpen continues to take big hits.

Braves placed RHP Jordan Walden on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 12, with right shoulder inflammation.
It's an injury that we hadn't heard about until now, but perhaps we should have known something was up with Walden allowing five runs over his last three appearances (1 1/3 innings). It's not clear at this point how long he'll be sidelined.

Obviously it's impossible to predict how much time Ayala might miss. David Carpenter has been recalled to take his spot in the bullpen.

Cristhian Martinez (shoulder) still doesn't have a timetable for his return.
The Braves reliever has been sidelined since April 12 with a right shoulder sprain, and apparently it was serious enough that the Braves still don't have any idea when he might be back. The right-hander had a 3.91 ERA with 65 strikeouts in 73 2/3 innings last year.
