R.A. Dickey was absolutely lit up by the Rays on Friday, surrendering eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits in just 4 2/3 innings.
Dickey entered the fourth inning holding a 2-0 lead. That didn't last long, as James Loney and Rene Rivera both hit two-run bombs off the veteran knuckle-baller. It worsened in the fifth, as Dickey allowed five more Rays to touch the plate. There was no big hit in that frame, just a slow, cruel trickle of sacrifice flies, run-scoring ground-outs and run-scoring fielding errors. When the dust settled, he had allowed seven earned runs on nine hits. While the ghastly outing pumped his ERA to 5.25, it should be noted that he entered the game with a 3.26 mark. He's posted an ERA north of 4.00 just one time in the last five seasons. It's not going to get any easier in his next outing, though, as he'll face a potent Red Sox team on the road.
