Scot Shields has officially retired from baseball.
Shields had to be shut down in September of last season due to elbow problems and drew very little interest on the free agent market this winter. He told reporters in January that he was open to continuing his career in the right situation, but that situation never came along. The 35-year-old righty will finish with a stellar 3.18 career ERA and can safely be called one of modern baseball's most reliable setup men.

Scot Shields has yet to make a decision about retirement.
The veteran setup man told reporters at the end of last season that he was thinking about hanging up his cleats for good, but several teams have expressed interest and he has not yet filed official retirement papers. "I'm not leaning any way," Shields told the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday. "If something comes along that seems like it's a good deal in a good place, I will play. If not, I'll be happy to stay home and spend time with my family."

Scot Shields told Dan Woike of the Orange County Register that he is contemplating retirement.
"I don’t know. I could be home," said Shields. "I’ve definitely put thought into that, just going home and spending time with the family, or, I could pitch again. If the right situation comes up, I’ll look at it. But I’ll be very happy to just go home." Shields hasn't pitched since September 7 due to tightness in his right elbow. The 35-year-old right-hander has struggled to stay on the field for each of the last two seasons, posting a 5.65 ERA over 63 appearances.

Scot Shields has probably thrown his last pitch this season because of a strained muscle on the inside of his forearm.
It appears Shields has avoided a major injury, as an MRI didn't reveal ligament damage to his elbow, but the forearm ailment is expected to end his year. He'll be examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum this week before a final decision is made. Shields has a 5.28 ERA in 43 games this season.

Peter Bourjos (hamstring) continues to receive treatment in Arizona, and will rejoin the team when they return to Anaheim on Monday.
Even the most optimistic of time frames have Bourjos returning to the lineup at the end of May or beginning of June. Hamstring injuries can be extremely detrimental to players like Bourjos who rely so heavily on their speed, as they tend to linger and pose a high re-injury risk. J.B. Shuck will continue to see additional time in left field while Bourjos is sidelined.

Jered Weaver (elbow) threw 5 2/3 innings Wednesday afternoon in a start at extended spring training.
Weaver allowed just one run and did not walk a batter while striking out nine. He threw 75 pitches, 62 of which were strikes. The right-hander is likely to rejoin the Angels' starting rotation early next week after missing the past month-plus with a fractured left elbow.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said that Tommy Hanson would "most likely not" start on Saturday in Kansas City.
Hanson has been away from the team since early May due to the death of his step-brother. The Halos were hoping he'd be ready to rejoin the rotation on Saturday, but he needs to get some work in at extended spring training first. The right-hander seems like to return sometime next week.

Madson felt renewed soreness in his right arm while trying to throw this week and has been shut down indefinitely. There is no longer a timetable for his return and he can be dropped in most fantasy formats at this point. Ernesto Frieri is the Angels' ninth-inning man.

Jepsen has been sidelined since April 12 with a strained right shoulder, but resumed throwing from a mound last weekend and hasn't had any setbacks. He remains on track to return from the DL sometime later this month.

Angels transferred LHP Andrew Taylor from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
Taylor was diagnosed with a small tear in his labrum last month. While he won't need surgery, it's unclear how long he'll be sidelined. The 26-year-old posted a 4.27 ERA and 56/25 K/BB ratio over 59 innings between Double- and Triple-A last year.
