Grant Balfour converted his eighth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning in Saturday's win over the Royals.
Balfour walked a batter but was otherwise unburdened. He entered this weekend with six saves but has picked up a pair in consecutive 2-1 wins against the Royals. The typically reliable Balfour is eight-for-eight in save conversions and holds a 1.56 ERA and 1.21 WHIP.

Grant Balfour converted his fifth save of the season with a scoreless inning in Sunday's win over the Yankees.
Balfour allowed a two-out single to Brett Gardner and then issued an intentional pass to Robinson Cano. He was able to put out the fire, though, getting a high fastball by Vernon Wells for his second strikeout of the inning. The fiery reliever is a perfect 5-for-5 in save chances this season, and he boasts a 2.02 ERA and 1.28 WHIP.

Grant Balfour picked up his first save of the season Saturday in the A's win over the Astros.
Balfour looked sharp, allowing no hits and striking out one of the three batters he faced. He emerged as an excellent fantasy closer last season and should again be a reliable option in 2013 even if the A's don't win as many games.

Grant Balfour (knee) threw a perfect inning while striking out one Thursday in his Cactus League debut.
The successful appearance followed a one-inning stint in a minor league game on Monday. Balfour is expected to make four more Cactus League appearances before the A's evaluate whether he's ready for the start of the season. It would be a surprise if they deem him unready.

It's a procedural move to open up a 40-man roster spot. Sizemore underwent his second major knee surgery in two years last week and will not play this season.

Hiroyuki Nakajima (hamstring) received a day off from his rehab assignment on Saturday but will play in each of the next three games with Triple-A Sacramento.
Nakajima has appeared in four games thus far with Sacramento, going 3-for-15 (.200) with a double and a pair of RBI. He's expected to need a lengthy rehab assignment before joining the Athletics, and isn't a lock to receive significant playing time once he is activated.

Josh Reddick admitted Monday that it's possible he'll need surgery on his ailing right wrist.
The good news is that Reddick has no structural damage, and he's already feeling better since being shut down over the last week. However, he'll wait another week before trying to swing a bat, and if he's not able to at that time, surgery might be required. Reddick had an operation on his left wrist after the 2011 season and need two months of recovery time, so if he does get cut open he's likely to be out past the All-Star break.

Brett Anderson was diagnosed with a navicular stress fracture of his right foot and will be shut down for four weeks.
Rough news for Anderson, who just can't seem to stay healthy. The 25-year-old southpaw is set to be reevaluated after four weeks, so his actual return to the Athletics likely won't be until around the early part of July. Dan Straily is filling his spot in the rotation for now, but the A's could turn to Sonny Gray if he continues to struggle.

Rodriguez will miss the entire 2013 season. The 28-year-old had a 5.37 and 78/34 K/BB ratio over 70 1/3 innings last season with the Astros and was acquired in February's Jed Lowrie deal.
