Brad Lidge has announced his retirement.
Lidge, 35, appeared in just nine games with the Nationals last season before being released. He'll end his 11-year career with a 3.54 ERA, 799 strikeouts, and 225 saves. His best season came in 2008, when he finished fourth in NL Cy Young voting and eighth in MVP.

Brad Lidge told ESPN's Jerry Crasnick that he hasn't decided whether he'll come back and pitch for another team this season.
Lidge was released by the Nationals earlier this week after being designated for assignment. The veteran right-hander has instructed his agents to take calls from interested teams, but he hasn't made up his mind about whether he will return in 2012. "I am healthy, but based on the path I would have to take to get back to the bigs this year I am not sure I will be jumping back in right now," said Lidge. "No official decision one way or another, but mostly I am not happy that I rushed back from surgery before I was ready only to be designated for assignment a couple of days later."

Nationals released RHP Brad Lidge.
Lidge was designated for assignment by the Nationals last weekend and passed through waivers with ease. However, he should draw plenty of interest on the open market now that he can sign at the league minimum. The veteran right-hander posted an ugly 9.64 ERA and 10/11 K/BB ratio over 9 1/3 innings with Washington.

Nationals designed RHP Brad Lidge for assignment.
Lidge has struggled with his command since returning from the disabled list and has appeared in just 11 games with the Nationals. He could draw interest on waivers and be a factor during the second half of the season if he eventually proves his health.

Ramos missed a couple weeks last month with the same injury. He doesn't think the strain is too bad, but it's possible the Nats will play it safe and hold him out longer this time around.

Jayson Werth (hamstring) will not be ready for activation from the disabled list on Friday and could be sidelined for as much as two more weeks.
Nationals manager Davey Johnson said he received an "alarming" report on Werth Monday, which obviously doesn't sound good. The outfielder experienced a setback with his hamstring during a rehab game last week and has yet to return to game action. He was slated to see a specialist over the weekend and evidently didn't receive good news. Roger Bernadina and Tyler Moore will continue to be the primary fill-ins for Werth.

Detwiler will play catch on Tuesday before throwing from a mound later in the week. With an off day on Thursday, the Nationals can delay Detwiler's next turn a few days. Zach Duke is making a spot start in his place on Monday.

Nationals placed RHP Ryan Mattheus on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 20, with a fractured right hand.
Mattheus suffered the injury Sunday after he gave up five runs on four hits and two walks over one inning against the Padres and punched his locker in frustration. No word yet on how long he'll be sidelined, but he's obviously facing an extended absence. The Nationals are calling up Yunesky Maya and Fernando Abad for some bullpen insurance.

Christian Garcia (forearm) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment this weekend with Double-A Harrisburg.
Garcia has been shut down since the early part of spring training with a partial tendon tear in his right forearm, but he's ready to return to game action. The Nationals were planning to stretch him out as a starter prior to the injury, but he'll pitch in relief for the time being.
