Rays manager Joe Maddon said that Fernando Rodney will likely be unavailable Friday.
Rodney threw 35 pitches during his blow save Thursday, so Maddon would like to stay from him. Joel Peralta is the most likely option to fill in and could eventually take the closer job if Rodney continues to look like, well, the old Rodney.

Rays manager Joe Maddon said he's "not really concerned yet" about Fernando Rodney.
"I'm not really concerned yet," said Maddon. "I'm not running away from Fernando. We'll get him right." Rodney walked four and allowed a bases-clearing double to the Red Sox' Will Middlebrooks when he blew a save on Thursday. Though he's struck out 23 over 15 1/3 innings, Rodney's 15 walks already match his total from last season. It sounds like he has a little more leash, but Rodney owners should pick up Joel Peralta just in case.

Fernando Rodney gave up three runs in the ninth to take his third blown save and his second loss Thursday against the Red Sox.
Rodney walked three to load the bases, got ahead of Will Middlebrooks 0-2 with two outs and then gave up a three-run double on a changeup left over the plate. Afterwards, he couldn't even be bothered to back up home plate. He was left in anyway, but only long enough to walk his fourth hitter of the night. Rodney's command has been an issue all year long, and he had no idea where his fastball was going tonight. His changeup was still working, and it was almost good enough to get him a scoreless inning and a save anyway. Still, he's officially become a problem for the Rays. He probably won't be pulled from the closer's role, but it's something Joe Maddon needs to think about. Joel Peralta would be next in line for saves.

Fernando Rodney struck out the side in the ninth inning to earn his seventh save of the season against the Red Sox on Tuesday.
Rodney has struck out 21 batters in 14 2/3 innings this season, and he looks to be fully past his early-season struggles. He's now posted four-straight scoreless appearances since his last blown save on May 6. He won't approach his historic 2012 numbers, but Rodney is still one of the better closers in the league.

Rays placed LHP David Price on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left triceps muscle.
Price suffered the injury Wednesday night in his start against the Red Sox. An MRI taken shortly after his exit showed no major damage and the Rays are optimistic that he will only miss a few turns in the rotation, but nothing is certain quite yet. Jake Odorizzi and Chris Archer are the primary candidates to replace Price.

Gomes had been pitching well for Tampa, putting up a 1.03 WHIP and 16/2 K/BB ratio over 11 2/3 innings. It's not clear at this point how long he'll be out. Josh Lueke has replaced him on the roster.

Rays transferred RHP Jeff Niemann from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the newly-acquired Jeff Beliveau. Niemann underwent shoulder surgery last week and is unlikely to return this season.

Rays purchased the contract of RHP Juan Carlos Oviedo, placed him on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.
Oviedo is working his way back from Tommy John surgery and will miss most, if not all, of the 2013 season. The Rays obviously have decided he's worth hanging onto in hopes he can contribute in 2014.
