Ramon Santiago’s two-run single was the big hit of the night Saturday, leading the Tigers to a 3-2 victory over the Rangers.
Santiago got the call at second base in the nightcap of the doubleheader and didn’t disappoint. The two-run single in the fourth inning off Neftali Feliz was his only hit in three trips to the plate, but it was a big base-knock and strong pitching allowed Detroit to hang on.

Ramon Santiago returned to action on Wednesday, going 0-for-3 with a strikeout in Detroit's 4-2 setback to Tampa Bay.
Santiago had exhibited flu-like symptoms earlier in the week. He remains hitless in six total at-bats.

Ramon Santiago was scratched from Tuesday's lineup against the Rays due to flu-like symptoms.
There's a flu bug going around the Tigers' clubhouse right now, but Santiago should be back to normal within the next day or two. Danny Worth will make the start at second base and bat eighth Tuesday.

Ramon Santiago went 3-for-3 with a couple of runs scored Sunday against the Phillies.
Manager Jim Leyland appeared to pretty much hand Ryan Raburn the second-base job last month and now the Tigers have Brandon Inge working out there as well, but the reliable Santiago can't be forgotten about. He's a far better defender than Raburn, and the Tigers might decide they need that defense since they're going to be below average at every other infield spot.

Austin Jackson will be placed on the disabled list Friday with an abdominal strain.
We figured it was just a matter of time. Jackson hasn't played since last Wednesday, so the Tigers couldn't afford to go shorthanded on their bench any longer. The 25-year-old center fielder is scheduled to return to Detroit on Friday to undergo additional testing, including an MRI. His stint on the disabled list will be backdated to May 17, so he'll be eligible to return on June 1. Quintin Berry and Don Kelly should share playing time in center field for now. Ryan Raburn will be activated from the bereavement list Friday in a corresponding roster move.

Victor Martinez (knee surgery) has been off crutches for 10 days.
Martinez had microfracture surgery on his left knee in late January and underwent a procedure in early March to help the healing of his ACL. V-Mart can't afford any setbacks, but he's encouraged about the possibility of returning in September. We should know more about his status when he undergoes an MRI during a check-up in July.

Valverde hasn't pitched since last Tuesday because of lower back tightness. The 34-year-old right-hander has a 5.51 ERA and is just 7-for-9 in save opportunities this season but remains a strong fantasy option at closer and should be made active in all leagues immediately.

Marte is over the hamstring strain that cost him all of April and should be ready to assume a middle relief role in Detroit. He made his major league debut last year.

Good news. Schlereth is already performing range of motion exercises and should soon be cleared to resume throwing. He's been on the disabled list since late April.

Al Alburquerque (elbow) has begun long-tossing at the Tigers' spring training facility in Florida.
Alburquerque is throwing from 150 feet, and if he continues to be progress should be cleared to throw off a mound before long. The Tigers are hoping to get the hard-throwing reliever back around the All-Star break.
