Gerald Laird hit a double and scored a run in Wednesday's loss to the Mariners.
Laird is filling in at catcher for Alex Avila, who has come down with knee soreness and could be out a few more games. The 32-year-old veteran carries no fantasy value.

Gerald Laird is recovering well from a left hamstring injury that he suffered in an exhibition game Wednesday.
The hamstring is evidently more of a concern than the knee now, but it doesn't sound like either ailment will keep him from being available to play. He'll be ready to back up Alex Avila on Saturday.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Thursday that Gerald Laird (knee) is "fine" for Opening Day.
Laird sprained his left knee near the end of spring training when he collided with teammate Don Kelly. The 32-year-old catcher will back up Alex Avila this season.

Gerald Laird (knee) thinks he'll be sidelined "only couple of days."
"Glad I did not blow it out," Laird said of his left knee following a collision with third baseman Don Kelly Friday. He's been diagnosed with a sprain, and evidently no further tests will be required.

Austin Jackson will be placed on the disabled list Friday with an abdominal strain.
We figured it was just a matter of time. Jackson hasn't played since last Wednesday, so the Tigers couldn't afford to go shorthanded on their bench any longer. The 25-year-old center fielder is scheduled to return to Detroit on Friday to undergo additional testing, including an MRI. His stint on the disabled list will be backdated to May 17, so he'll be eligible to return on June 1. Quintin Berry and Don Kelly should share playing time in center field for now. Ryan Raburn will be activated from the bereavement list Friday in a corresponding roster move.

Victor Martinez (knee surgery) has been off crutches for 10 days.
Martinez had microfracture surgery on his left knee in late January and underwent a procedure in early March to help the healing of his ACL. V-Mart can't afford any setbacks, but he's encouraged about the possibility of returning in September. We should know more about his status when he undergoes an MRI during a check-up in July.

Valverde hasn't pitched since last Tuesday because of lower back tightness. The 34-year-old right-hander has a 5.51 ERA and is just 7-for-9 in save opportunities this season but remains a strong fantasy option at closer and should be made active in all leagues immediately.

Good news. Schlereth is already performing range of motion exercises and should soon be cleared to resume throwing. He's been on the disabled list since late April.

Al Alburquerque (elbow) has begun long-tossing at the Tigers' spring training facility in Florida.
Alburquerque is throwing from 150 feet, and if he continues to be progress should be cleared to throw off a mound before long. The Tigers are hoping to get the hard-throwing reliever back around the All-Star break.
