Peter Gammons of MLB Network reports that Rich Harden had surgery last week to repair a torn capsule muscle in his right shoulder and will miss the entire 2012 season.
Gammons said on MLB Network on Wednesday that the surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews. The rehab process from a torn capsule can be tricky (see: Chien-Ming Wang and Johan Santana for two prominent recent examples), but he's aiming to come back healthy in 2013. Harden, 30, posted a 5.12 ERA and 91/31 K/BB ratio over 82 2/3 innings for the A's last season.

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, some teams are interested in Rich Harden as a reliever.
Harden would probably prefer to remain a starter, but his free-agent options are far from plentiful and he might have to settle for a bullpen job if no team comes forward with a rotation spot. The 30-year-old right-hander posted a disappointing 5.12 ERA in 82 2/3 innings last season for Oakland despite an impressive 91/31 K/BB ratio.

Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Rockies are interested in free agents Rich Harden and Bruce Chen.
They're also interested in bringing back Kevin Millwood, which has been reported previously. We like Harden on an incentive-laden deal, as he should come cheaply and could wind up being worth it even if he's only able to make 15-20 starts. Chen, though, as an extreme flyball pitcher that doesn't miss bats, would be a disaster waiting to happen in Coors Field.

Rich Harden would like to return to Oakland next season.
Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle thinks a reunion is very possible and we tend to agree. Harden didn't finish the year strong; Sunday's quality start was just his seventh in 15 tries. He wound up striking out 91 over 82 2/3 innings, but he produced just a 5.12 ERA and 1.43 WHIP this season. In other words, he should be cheap, especially in light of his frailty, perhaps even having to settle for an incentive-laden, non-guaranteed contract over the winter. Oakland, meanwhile, needs starting pitching insurance. Brandon McCarthy is also a health risk, Brett Anderson won't be available until July and Dallas Braden might not be up to speed by the start of spring training.

Brandon Inge

Brandon Inge (groin) did 14-15 sprints on Tuesday and is scheduled to do more running Wednesday.
Inge was placed on the disabled list 10 days ago with a strained left groin. He's optimistic about returning when he's first eligible Monday. The veteran third baseman has five home runs and 17 RBI in 11 games since joining the A's.

Scott Sizemore underwent successful surgery on his left knee Wednesday morning.
Sizemore was expected to open the season as the A's starting third baseman, but he tore the ACL in his left knee early in camp and has been ruled out for the entire 2012 season. However, he's fully expected to be ready for spring training next year.

D.L.
Yoenis Cespedes will change the way he grips a bat in time for his return from the disabled list.
Cespedes used to nestle the knob of the bat in the palm of his hand, but the A's think that may have caused the muscle strain that sent him to the disabled list and want him to stop. "It's not like Yoenis has an easy swing; he swings the bat hard," manager Bob Melvin said. "This is proactive." Cespedes should be ready by early June.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that the team is not "locked into" activating Manny Ramirez on May 30.
Ramirez is eligible to join the A's on May 30, but the team wants him to get around 40 at-bats in the minors and show that he can produce offensively. He's 3-for-8 with two walks over his first three games with Triple-A Sacramento.

Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) is scheduled to resume throwing later this week and is expected to be ready for activation when first eligible on June 2.
Obviously, we won't know for sure if he'll be ready then until we see how he feels after picking up a ball again. But, the A's seem optimistic and McCarthy himself said when he went on the DL that he wouldn't be out long. Feel free to scoop him up in fantasy leagues if he's been dropped.

Dallas Braden (shoulder) has currently halted his throwing program.
Braden had been playing catch often, but the A's have decided he needs to build up more shoulder strength before throwing again. He remains without a timetable for return, but we almost surely won't see him before the All-Star break.

Brett Anderson
D.L.
Brett Anderson (elbow) will be shut down for a few days with forearm tightness.
It's not a huge concern at this point, given he's coming back from Tommy John surgery. If all goes as scheduled, he could rejoin Oakland's rotation as soon as late June or early July.
