Jonathan Papelbon is not currently looking to sign with a major league team.
The 36-year-old spent most of this season as the Nationals' closer before being displaced by Mark Melancon at the trade deadline. He registered 19 saves in 22 chances and finished with a 4.37 ERA in 35 innings. He was released by the club in mid-August and opted not to sign anywhere else despite interest from multiple teams -- including the Red Sox. Papelbon's agent Seth Levinson said today that Papelbon is focusing on a private family matter and will not decide on his baseball future until that matter is resolved. Papelbon ranks ninth on the all-time save leaders' list with 368. After breaking into the majors in 2005, Papelbon has delivered a 2.44 career ERA with 808 strikeouts in 725 2/3 innings with the Red Sox, Phillies and Nationals. Sat, Dec 10, 2016 08:24:00 PM
